What is a comprehensive eye exam?

A comprehensive eye exam checks your eyes and vision. It’s a quick outpatient procedure that uses various tests to look for vision problems or diseases that affect the eyes. Each test examines a different aspect of your visual health. If the team identifies any problems, they can make treatment recommendations to prevent them from worsening.

Who can benefit from comprehensive eye exams?

The Vistasite Eye Care team believes everyone can benefit from comprehensive eye exams, but the frequency of checkups depends on your age and health history.

Children 3 and younger

Have your baby’s eyes examined no later than age 3. The team can check for common childhood eye problems, such as lazy eyes, crossed eyes, or eye misalignments. They can also determine if your child has a refractive error and can benefit from glasses.

School-aged kids and teens

Get your child’s eyes checked before they enroll in preschool or kindergarten. If necessary, the team can prescribe glasses to help your child see in the classroom.

Adults

If you wear glasses or contacts, visit an eye doctor every one or two years to update your prescription and check in on your health.

If you don’t have any vision problems, schedule an eye exam at 40 and then again every two years for routine checkups.

What do comprehensive eye exams involve?

At Vistasite Eye Care, the team tailors comprehensive eye exams to each patient’s needs. Even so, most checkups follow a similar structure, including:

  • Test your visual acuity to see if glasses or contacts can improve your vision
  • Measurement of your eye pressure, checking for glaucoma
  • Dilated eye exam so your provider can see the back of your eye
  • Other tests to check your vision and the function of your eye

At the end of the exam, your Vistasite Eye Care provider explains the results of your tests and makes treatment recommendations. If the tests confirm that your eyes are healthy, you can wait another year or two until your next checkup.

If the team identifies a refractive error, like nearsightedness, or an underlying vision problem, they make treatment recommendations. That might mean wearing glasses, using prescription eye drops, or undergoing surgery, depending on your needs.
